本藥物多澀，或為炭類，或質粘，其性多平，或涼而不寒，功能收斂止血。無論虛寒性出血或熱性出血均可用之；然其性收澀，有留瘀戀邪之弊，當以出血無瘀者為宜，若有瘀血及邪實者，當慎之。
